I've taken a course in it with a 'master' who has been using it since 1992, and he loves it. He says you can do anything with GibbsCAM and it's the easiest program available. Is this true?
Why can't CAM programs be as easy to use as CAD? I have only ever tried Inventor once (Solidworks user normally), but I was able to make a fairly complex part in less than two hours after never having used it before. There's no chance I could have done that with GibbsCAM. I understand that making a toolpath is different than making a part, but that doesn't have any relevance to simple functionality. For example, I needed to draw a line in space on GibbsCAM without knowing the coordinates of the endpoints. I had to extract edges from the gear teeth, insert a two points line, connect the points to the line, create a center point on that line, do the same for the other side of the gear tooth, insert a line between the to newly created midpoints, extend the part boundary by an arbitrary amout (z+2, x+4) so that the line could be slightly longer, then repeat all of these INSANE step to create an angled line that would intersect my 'midpoint' line, so that I could finally put a point out on the midpoint line, through which I could define (without any clear definition) a length on my midpoint line. What kind of programmer thinks it's reasonable to do all of these operations???
I really hope to hear some input as to how in the world one is supposed to use this system. I've gone through the manual (the one that we bought with the program) and it is vague beyond the point use. I get that this program was written 20 something years ago, and there's a lot of nostalgia, but why not modernize it?
Why keep this dinosaur alive? Why not, at the very least, create a functional, CAD-like interface? Is there just not enough competition in the field? How is MasterCAM or ProCAM with these issues? I've used GibbsCam, but not for many years, it was a pain to draw in then.
Mostly use Masterscam now and transitioning to HSMWorks, some WorkNC experience, also years out of date. Mastercam is the the ugly chick that will do anything. Thats why people use it. You can get it done in Mastercam, but its buggy, ugly and you have to watch your ass as its not always obvious when its going to cut your part in two. HSMWorks is the new kid on the block. Its what you want to use if you know SolidWorks.
Solid tool paths and wicked tool library management, with all the SolidWorks cad goodies. Try there free version HSMWorks Express. 2D only but there is lots of work you can do with that.
WorkNC is the high end hooker. Will do anything but you pay for it. Very expensive program, but killer surfacing and stock model tool pathing. Wish I still had a good ripped copy.
So are you complaining about the geometry creation or the toolpath creation? As far as creating toolpath, I will agree that it is the easiest on the market.
I am basing this on the number of clicks it takes to create and edit a toolpath, the number of popup windows and ease of post processing. I am comparing this to MasterCAM, CAMWorks, NX, SurfCAM, HSMWorks and Esprit. I have used all of these and Gibbs is the easiest to create toolpath in. Creating geometry is a different thing entirely. There are a couple things to remember.1)It is GibbsCAM not GibbsCAD. Its main purpose is to create toolpath. 2)Being a stand-alone CAM solution, it would have to license much of the technology to incorporate parametric modeling which would drive the price up.
This is why SolidCAM, CAMWorks and HSMWorks are a little cheaper than other mid-range CAM packages. They don't have to worry about a CAD kernel at all, but you shoulder that burden by having to purchase a seat of SolidWorks.
I used Gibbs in the late 90s and I made a ton of cool stuff with it. But I wholeheartedly agree that the CAD side is bad.
As far as your question about why cant CAM systems be as easy as CAD here is my take on it. In CAD you are able to freely create with no rules.
The laws of physics or manufacturing dont apply. It is just a picture on your screen.
It is very easy to create a powerful design tool that is not limited. But with CAM, you are limited by the 'real world' and the 'real world' is never a standard thing. You have to take into account actual physical properties for the process you are going to use to make it. The tool, speed, feed, engagement, exit, cutting path, external actions (i.e. Coolant, table tilt, axis rotation) are all things that determing how YOU are going to machine something. Now when I go to manufacture the exact same part ALL of those things are variable and will most likely change.
So the CAM system has to take into account pretty much every scenario imaginable and unimaginable yet still be constrained by the laws of physics and manufacturing. Here is an example.Surface pull/push.
This is a fun tool in CAD. You can morph a surface to any shape you would like. Just grab a little handle on your screen and tweek away. This is a very fun and easy feature of most CAD systems. Now imagine doing the equivalent free form creation on a toolpath. Now you and the software have to take into account, clearances, undercuts, cutter engagement, rotational axis if there are any, coolant, fixture and part gouge checking.
CAM is just more complicated. Now for the record, I would love.LOVE to see a CAM system out there that takes the best things from all the other packages and makes one 'easy' to use package. But I just dont see that ever happening. That is a topic for another rant. Yes, but then I can't figure out how to set that line to reference points. For example, if I draw a line in space freehand, how do I modify where it sits relative to the other points, without having to know the exact coordinates of the endpoints. I want to draw a line that intersects another line 1/3 of the way between that line's endpoints, and terminates on another line 2 cm from its endpoint.
I can't figure out how to create these lines without sitting down with a piece of paper and a calculator and finding the exact xyz coords of each endpoint (which is useless if the line doesn't perfectly intersect the other line. This is just one issue out of nearly 100 that I can't seem to wrap my head around with Gibbs. I've re-read the parts of the user manual that I have that are relevant to the different issues I'm having a dozen times, but it says nothing useful. The manual I have only gives two non-in-depth paragraphs that don't help at all. Do you have any ideas of resources to start training with? I don't exactly follow what you're attempting to do.
If you hand draw a line you can find the locations by using the dimension palette, and if you select a point and a line it's easy to create a perpendicular line, then create a line parallel to that at the spacing of your choice. Do you work at a shop with Gibbs? If so get the user name and password so you can watch the online tutorials, also if you press control B it will enable help balloons on whatever you hover over, or just use the help search. I find Gibbs easy to use and intuitive but I have been using it for a long time.
